Featured Article - SASREF wins 2017 Reliability Program of the Year

Saudi Aramco Shell refinery (SASREF) in Jubail, Saudi Arabia won the prestigious 2017 Reliability Program of the Year award for their reliability program. Performance benefits were realized in emergency maintenance and mechanical availability, both of which jumped two quartiles. This added some real value with a 13.5% reduction in maintenance cost from the total budget, including overhead, and a 38% reduction in cost-avoidance bad actors, reducing maintenance costs an additional 3.2% this year.

All of this couldn’t have been achieved without hard work and a successful reliability program. “It starts with our vision to safely achieve best-in-class performance, maximizing profitability, with commitment to our people and community,” said Yahya Hamdi, reliability engineer, maintenance strategy, at SASREF. “We have four core values: people, safety, ethics and excellence. We always start with people.”

The Reliability Program of the Year was created to recognize companies that best demonstrate the effective application of integrated maintenance best practices, including the leadership in implementing a “best in class” reliability program, the application of reliability-based technologies and ultimately the creation of quantifiable returns. While many plants are considered, the detailed evaluation process ultimately leads to a single facility that is recognized annually as the Reliability Program of the Year.

Reliability Technology & Tools

There are a variety of technologies and techniques available today for collecting the vibration and process data necessary for improving reliability. Understanding the specifications related to an online monitoring system can be tricky, but it is critical to selecting the right system for the application.

This short summary explains why an online system may be appropriate to your application, and the system specifications to be considered for delivering the most accurate and complete picture of machinery health.

Reliability Tip:

Doing Nothing May Be the Most Expensive Decision You Make

Overstocking spare parts can increase a company’s operating costs through higher taxes, insurance, and potential overhead. It’s important to find the right balance when stocking spare parts because understocking spare parts can be as expensive as overstocking. If a necessary part is not on the shelf when it is needed, production will be forced to stop, potentially costing the company millions.

Take steps to better manage your inventory today. By using an inventory optimization process, you can manage your spare parts inventory and balance the risk of getting caught short against the cost of carrying excess inventory. Right sizing inventory protects availability while eliminating gross overstocking and understocking. By determining the optimum stock levels for critical spares, you minimize the total combined risk costs of potential shortages and overstocks in your MRO inventory.

Deciding to do nothing can be a costly mistake. Protect the availability of your spare parts and the reliability of your operations. Striking the right balance of inventory will make the best use of your dollars.
